Our story:

Following the demise of cigar bars in New Zealand on 10 December 2004, many people were left without a place to enjoy a peaceful fine cigar and a delicious spirit with interesting company. Others were denied a monthly social event or just a place to learn about noble products such as cigars and fine spirits.

Something had to be done. A group of aficionados who had their social lives severely disrupted by the new laws, decided not to lie down and be bullied this way.  Monthly meetings were soon set up with mostly regulars of the Casa Del Oro cigar bar in Auckland at a small courtyard of a Mt Eden cafe.

A non-profit organisation, New Zealand Aficionados Society, was born in February 2006 with a small band of passionate volunteers to arrange events in a more organised fashion, with the ideals to bring together like minded people, suppliers, other related events scattered about the country.

The original events became progressively popular and well attended so a new venue was sort after.  The fantastic covered courtyard at the Horse and Trap in Mt Eden was settled upon as it can hold up to 50 aficionados with ease, is wind and weather proof with heaters and tasty food if required. This has become the regular monthly meeting place although special events are run at a variety of venues around Auckland.

NZAS organised events aim to be relaxed, social and educational.  We look forward to many enjoyable future events.
